This Tuesday morning I shed light on the US Hockey team’s disappointing Silver against Canada, and how the force that is Shaun White helped bring in the USA’s second most total medals since 1932.  Back home in the NBA Shaq’s out with a thumb injury, but the Cavs roll on!  I take some time to discuss the status of Dwayne Wade, Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, the upcoming NFL free agency period, Jordan’s acquisition of the Charlotte Bobcats, and, of course, Brett Favre!

All Night Appetite w/ Darren (SEN 1116)

Back in NYC as football fans are looking forward to next weeks Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints playing in Miami, Florida. A little appetizer with the Pro Bowl being played tonight in Miami, but with many of the stars absent including 7 each from the Colts and Saints rosters. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner announces his retirement this week ending a what I think is a hall of fame career and a incredible cinderella story. In the Super Bowl the Colts are now a 5.5 point favorites after the line opened at 3.5. I along with much of the public like the Colts, but I reserve the right to change my opinion this week. In the NBA some close games last night and some big matchups today. The highlight being the Boston Celtics hosting the defending champion and their primary rival the Los Angeles Lakers. NBA commissioner David Stern has ruled both Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton suspended for the remainder of the season for the gun incident in the locker room. The NHL also has a marquee matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the Detroit Red Wings in a rematch of the last two NHL Stanley Cup Finals.

All Night Appetite w/ Darren (SEN 1116)

A recap of the 2 NFL games played Saturday. The New York Jets defeated the Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys eliminated the Philadelphia Eagles. In action today the Baltimore Ravens have jumped on top of the New England Patriots and later this afternoon the Arizona Cardinals host the Green Bay Packers. I would take the Cardinals in this one. In college football Alabama defeated Texas for the National Championship. Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas suspended indefinitely for brandishing fire arms in the locker room. A discussion of other NBA games in action today and about the Detroit Pistons struggles. Also an update on today’s NHL slate. In boxing the Floyd Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao fight is officially off.

Picks for New Years Day

In what used to be a much more action filled day, loaded with college bowl games, there are only 5 games today. I think the sports highlight is the Winter Classic NHL game to be played this year at Fenway Park in Boston.

Boston Bruins (H) vs Philadelphia Flyers (Bruins -135, opened -140)
I am going with the Bruins -135 today. I think they have an advantage in goal with Tim Thomas the 2009 Vezina Trophy winner in net. Philly netminder, Michael Leighton has played great since joining the Flyers from the Carolina Hurricanes winning 4 games in a row, but I see that streak coming to an end. The weather should be ok, which is strange to have to mention for a hockey game.

Captial One Bowl, Citrus Bowl- Orlando, Florida
LSU Tigers vs Penn State Nittany Lions (LSU by 1, opend PSU by 2.5)
I am going with the line move and hope that I’m not jumping on with the public, but I am going with LSU -1. I just think the SEC is far superior to the Big-10 and LSU’s speed and athletes will be the difference.

In the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl I think I would certainly be with the masses picking against the Big-10 (selecting Oregon in the Rose Bowl) and with the SEC (Florida in the Sugar Bowl). I am afraid of both of these games. but I would lean towards Oregon and Florida.

Boston Bruins -135 (2 out of 5)
LSU -1 (2 out of 5)

Pick for Dec. 12th

First Saturday without a slate of college football games, it is going to be a lot harder to find some worthwhile picks, but I got to sleep in. After a very ordinary season with few big games and performances last week provided fans with some thrilling games and remarkable performances. The national championship game is set with the SEC champion Alabama Crimson Tide (13-0) installed as a 5-point favorite (opened 3.5) over the Big 12 champion Texas Longhorns (13-0). My first instinct is Alabama, as it has to be for most observers after how incredible they looked last week, Texas having an awful game barely beating Nebraska, and the SEC winning 3 BCS championships in a row. However the game is weeks away and a lot can happen such as suspensions, injuries and other distractions. The Heisman Trophy winner will be announced tonight, it has been a wide open race all season and in the age of electronic voting, went down to the wire. Alabama running back Mark Ingram is a huge favorite to win and I think he is deserving. His performance in the SEC championship game along with an incredible season in the best conference in the nation distinguishes himself over (in order of how I think they will finish): Toby Gerhart, Colt McCoy, Ndamukong Suh, and Tim Tebow. In what will be a very regional vote, the northeast will be the deciding factor for Ingram. Stanford’s RB Toby Gerhart will dominate the voting in the west and will also do pretty well in the northeast for a close second. I personally think that Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh should be second after dominating the Big 12 championship game. Texas QB Colt McCoy ruined his chance after almost letting the clock run out on Texas’ season and lying about it all week on television was just disgraceful.

I don’t have a feel on Army-Navy or the 1-AA semifinal, so I will give you one selection each from the NBA, NCAA basketball and the NHL.

Milwaukee Bucks (H) vs Portland Trailblazers (Bucks by 4, opened 1)
I am going with the Bucks -4 as both point guard Brandon Jennings and shooting guard Michael Redd are expected to play. The Blazers have been battling injuries, and is playing back-to-back and their 3rd game in 4 nights, the Bucks are on 2 days of rest.

Purdue Boilermakers vs Alabama Crimson Tide (H) (Total 134, opened 137)
I am going with the line move and taking the Under 134. This is a nationally televised game and it is uncommon to see the total go down. Purdue is ranked 5th in the country and I expect Alabama to try to keep the game close and shorten the game.

NHL Grand Salami (69 Goals)
They have barely been hitting, but the Saturday night overs are starting to come back and have went over the past 2 weeks. I am going with Over 69, in the total goals tonight in the NHL. I am hoping for a lot of goals out of Washington at Toronto.

Bucks -4 (3 out of 5)
Purdue/Alabama Under 134 (2 out of 5)
NHL Grand Salami Over 69 (2 out of 5)

Picks for Dec. 2nd

I’m making 2 picks today.

Atlanta Hawks (H) vs Toronto Raptors (Total 211, opened 214)
Not a huge move, but I am going with the Under 211.

New Jersey Devils (H) vs Vancouver Canucks (Devils -115, opened -135)
I am going with the Canucks -105, in seems like a very strange line and move. The Devils have a much better record than Vancouver.

Under Hawks/Raptors 211 (2 out of 5)
Canucks -105 (3 out of 5)
