All Night Appetite (SEN 1116)

The Australian Open is in full swing, and today I discuss the lack of American interest in Professional Tennis.  In golf, John Daly has started very well at the Farmers Insurance Open in California, and Tiger Woods may be back at the top of his game.  NFL fans have big things to look forward to with the Pro Bowl this weekend – a very tricky game to judge!  The Superbowl is the same as it seems both teams have a great chance to take this one.  Also this weekend, NHL history will take place at the All Star Game where Eric Staal and Nick Lidstrom will be drafting teams, like pond or fantasy hockey, from the pre-selected All Stars. And in the NBA, the New York Knicks will get a rematch with the Miami Heat.  Listen to today’s show to find out why I think the Knicks may take this one!

Today, I talk about the opening weekend of the NFL season. The Redskins upset the Cowboys after an all time bonehead play to end the half, and a holding penalty that erased a touchdown on the final play of the game.  Tom Brady and the Patriots lit up the Cincinnati Bengals and the Houston Texas won an historic game for their young franchise over the Indianapolis Colts.  In college football James Madison University pulls off an all time shocker defeating Virginia Tech.  In other sports, the Kevin Durant show has been taking over World Basketball as USA takes Gold in Istanbul, Iverson may be heading to China, and US Open fans are upset after losing the chance to see a Federer vs. Nadal title match.

NFL starts this weekend!  Tom Brady in a car crash!  He’s okay, and will be ready to take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Saints vs. Vikings open the season with a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship game.  Also, I stick my neck out and predict this year’s Superbowl.  Rumors abound for a Carmelo Anthony trade.  USA Basketball continues to roll defeating Russia and will take on Lithuania and their hot 3-point shooting in the semis.  Tiger Woods is named to the Ryder Cup team, will he be an asset to the American side?

Today, I get into Usain Bolt, the jamaican sprinter, as he eyes the prize of a professional football or soccer career after retirement from track and field and how Brett Favre is primed for a career topping season, but will his support be as strong as last year’s? Also, college football with a lackluster start this weekend seeing top ranked teams dominating over lower ranked teams. USA Basketball blows Angola out of the water, and the US sees Roddick fail to be the flag bearer they wanted as he is ousted from the US Open while verbally jousting the umpire. All this and more on today’s show!

As preseason football heads into it’s final games I ponder the possibility of Brett Favre duplicating last year’s success. Also, I talk Roger Clemens’ lies, and how drugs have affected America’s favorite pastime. The NHL off-season sees some big news with Ilya Kovalchuk having problems with his massive contract. USA Basketball not the biggest thing on the minds of American sports fans this year. And, as the US Open fires up, I talk about the lack of strong American players in tennis today.

In golf, Tiger comes back strong after his divorce is finalized.  In baseball news Roger Clemens’ hard times are not over with a prospective court date as early as next year.  Soccer hears rumors surrounding Bob Bradley heading to Astin Villa.  In basketball, Rajon Rondo resigns from the US Basketball team for “family reasons”, and I also ponder which of Shaq’s teams would retire his jersey.  In the NFL, Brett Favre calms down and gets on board with Childress, but will his receivers be able to keep up? And finally, the US Open begins next week and US fans are excited as Andy Roddick gives the US their only hope at a Men’s title.  I talk about all this and more on today’s show.

All Night Appetite w/ Darren (SEN 1116)

Live from Taormina, Sicily, Italy. The first Sunday of NFL action. Live comentary on the 1 o’clock (ET) games as many of the games enter the 4th quarter. Donovan McNabb goes out with a rib injury, could we see Michael Vick play after his suspension ends? Brett Favre is managing the game just fine as Adrian Peterson and the Vikings defense is taking control over the Cleveland Browns. A preview of the 4 o’clock games with the San Francisco 49ers being my top pick as an underdog against the Super Bowl runner-up Arizona Cardinals. (check out Chief’s Selections). Look for Arizona to have a bit of a hangover this afternoon and this season. The New York Giants and the Washington Redskins meet in a rivalry game that I would expect to be close and low scoring. The Seattle Seahawks should have no problem with the St. Louis Rams. In Tennis the US Open women’s semi-final ends in strange fashion with Serena Williams losing on a penalty point. She continues to show her immaturity and that really has hurt her popularity level in the States. Congratulations to Kim Clijsters whose incredible comeback from retirement should be the main story of the match and the tournament as she should take the championship. Tiger Woods dominates the field in the BMW at Cog Hill in Illinois (and hurts the chances of a US Open there) and looks to take the FedEx Cup in Atlanta at the end of the month.

Question from Cossy the Aussie

Chief, given Serena Williams outburst last night in the semis and thus being thrown out on match point, could she have used one of her challenges on the foot fault call prior to the outburst?

Also with all challenges we have Hawk-Eye, so why is TV showing replays of the foot fault from an impossible camera angle which is behind the line, why not use Hawk-Eye which is on the line to show replays?

Great question, but you cannot challenge a foot fault. You are only able to challenge line calls. I don’t know why you couldn’t use the Hawk-Eye or another form of replay for foot faults. I don’t think it would have made much of a difference, but you never know. Flavia Pennetta saved 6 match points in the second set of match earlier in the tournament. It also would have saved Serena some embarrassment of being eliminated on a penalty point. I will say tennis has the best replay system (it also is the easiest sport to officiate with virtually no judgement calls), but a system to challenge foot faults would be an improvement.

All Night Appetite w/ Darren (SEN 1116)

Live from Taormina, Sicily, Italy. A recap of last night’s game as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Tennessee Titans 13-10 in overtime. The Steelers won the coin toss, drove down the field, and then kicked a field goal (on 1st down) to win. I really have a problem with the overtime rule and think the league should consider changing it. Unfortunately it will take a Super Bowl decided by the flip of the coin to spark the outrage needed. Weather effects the US Open as they are trying to get play under way in New York. I’m glad to be here, it is warm and sunny.

Pick for Tuesday Sept. 8th

I’m going with 13th ranked Gael Monfils over 3rd seeded Rafael Nadal. Monfils is the underdog, Betfair has him at 2.64, which is slightly better than 8/5. I am surprised the line is this low, but this is not Nadal’s surface and he didn’t look like he was 100% against Almagro in the 3rd round. Monfils has had to play only 8 sets (and 1 game before Acasuso retired) and should be fresh.
